Travelling by subway in Stockholm is like traveling through an exciting story that extends from the artistic pioneers of the 1950s to the art experiments of today.
Stockholm’s subway system (Tunnelbana or T-bana) is not just public transportation – it’s a world-class underground art gallery! Spanning 110 kilometers with 100 stations, nearly 90 of these stations are adorned with stunning paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and installations by over 150 artists, making it the longest art gallery in the world.
Since the 1950s, Stockholm’s subway stations have been transformed into breathtaking art installations, with each station telling a different story. Many stations feature themes related to history, politics, human rights, and nature, turning ordinary commutes into inspiring experiences.
Some stations feel like ancient caves, while others resemble cosmic landscapes, abstract art, or medieval ruins. No matter which line you take, you’ll be surrounded by creativity and culture.
Exploring the Stockholm subway is like stepping into a massive art museum beneath the city – and the best part? It’s included in the price of a metro ticket!
The tour starts at Kungsträdgården’s subway station. We visit three different subway stations and finish the tour at the 135-year-old Historical Food Hall Östermalms Saluhall.
