Riddarholmskyrkan (Riddarholm Church) is one of Stockholm’s most historic and significant landmarks. Located on Riddarholmen, an island in the heart of Stockholm, this medieval church is the final resting place of nearly all Swedish monarchs from the 17th century until 1950.
Unlike any other church in Sweden, Riddarholmskyrkan is no longer used for regular services, but instead, it stands as a royal burial church and a national monument, making it a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and those interested in Sweden’s royal past.
Riddarholmen, meaning “The Knights’ Islet”, is one of Stockholm’s most historic and picturesque islands. Located just beside Gamla Stan (Old Town), this small island was once home to Sweden’s noble families and is now filled with stunning palaces, beautiful waterfront views, and historic landmarks.
The island is home to several 17th-century palaces, once belonging to noble families.
Some famous buildings include Wrangel Palace, Stenbock Palace, and Schering Rosenhane’s Palace.
The island’s narrow cobblestone streets and historic courtyards make for a perfect walk-through Stockholm’s past.
